Some people believe that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences, while others argue that there are better alternatives.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Crime has been a persistent issue in modern societies, and governments continue to search for effective solutions. While longer prison sentences are often proposed as a deterrent, I believe that a combination of education, rehabilitation and community programmes offers a more sustainable path to reducing crime.

On the one hand, supporters of longer sentences argue that harsh punishment discourages potential offenders. When the consequences of a crime are severe, individuals may think twice before breaking the law. This view is particularly common among politicians who need to appear tough on crime to satisfy public opinion.

On the other hand, evidence from countries such as Norway and the Netherlands suggests that rehabilitation-focused systems achieve lower reoffending rates. Prisoners who receive education, vocational training and psychological support are more likely to reintegrate into society successfully. In contrast, long sentences without rehabilitation often harden offenders and damage family structures.

In my opinion, the most effective approach combines both views. Serious crimes must carry serious consequences, but the goal of any justice system should be to reduce crime in the long term, not simply to punish. Investing in rehabilitation is therefore not soft on crime; it is a practical response to it.
